Week 83 – A BOMB Week in Reno!!

The six missionaries serving in the Sierra Branch
April 18, 2016
Hey everyone!!

As the subject line suggests, this week has been absolutely AWESOME! And I feel like I say this every week, but this week it is really true! We saw tons of miracles, many of which were really big! The Lord has blessed us immensely this past week. Let me share a few of the miracles:

Elder Han and I with the Luciano's daughter
First, the Luciano family is doing well! We taught them 3 times this week, which was a huge step because in the past we could only see them once a week. But they are opening their schedules more to have us come by. Their 17-year old daughter is progressing the best out of all of them still. She is reading the Book of Mormon regularly and praying, and she tells us of the spiritual experiences that she has while she does so. We are super excited that she has those spiritual experiences on her own, because that is crucial to someone's conversion…their ability to have spiritual experiences on their own. She is all set to be baptized on May 14th. The parents are also progressing – but slowly. They are cutting back on cigarettes and they are excited about their progress in that regard, but they are not reading the Book of Mormon on their own. Therefore, they aren't progressing as fast as their daughter. Truly, the daughter is pulling the family along, and always reminding them to quit smoking and read the scriptures. She was the only one who came to church this week; the mom and dad had some other things to do. The mother is really hesitant to come to church with us, and we aren't sure why. But she promised her daughter that she would come next Sunday, so we will see what happens. We aren't sure if the parents will be ready for May 14th. We are going back tonight for another lesson.

Next big miracle: This Friday, I was on exchanges in an area in South Reno, where it is mostly high-end neighborhoods with lots of wealthy white people. There are quite a few members down there, but the work has been struggling in that area for the past year or so, and hasn't seen much success. I went to the area with Elder Stotts, who is in his 2nd transfer, and is still pretty much a greenie. He doesn't know the area super well yet, and so we had a hard time planning the night before for our day together. To be 100% honest, I was not exactly looking forward to the day, because we didn't have many lessons planned, just a lot of knocking doors in a hard neighborhood. But, I knew that if we had a great day together then it would really make a difference for the new Elder, and help him grow. So the next day, we went to work with smiles on our faces, and we prayed like crazy that we could see miracles.

In the morning while we were doing our studies, we got a text to our phone that was a referral from www.mormon.org for a man named Alan. We were excited, but I was skeptical because they usually don't turn into anything. But we worked all afternoon and it was about 4:30pm and we had seen ZERO success. We talked to every single person we saw in the afternoon, but nobody was interested. We happened to be in the neighborhood of the referral we got earlier, so we decided to go and knock on it. We knocked on the door, but nobody was there. We were walking back to the car, and then Elder Stotts said, hey let’s go see if there is anyone in that open garage down the street. So we walked towards the garage, and a man in his 30s came around the corner walking his dog. We stopped him and started talking, like we do with everyone, and then he said, "Ya know its really funny that I run into you guys, because just the other day my Mom said that she would be sending two missionaries from a church over to my house." Our jaws dropped, and we asked him, "Are you Alan?" And then his jaw dropped and he said, "Yes, how did you know?" with a skeptical/scared look on his face. We then explained what had happened, and we confirmed that he was the man that we had received a referral for. He immediately invited us into his home, so we went in and had a GREAT first lesson.

Exchanges with Elder Stotts...turned out to be one
of the best days of my mission!
It turns out that he grew up in a family in an Asian religion that did not believe in Christ or God or anything like that. His mom lived in Chico, California, and she recently ran into the missionaries and they began teaching her in California. She absolutely loves the church, and is going to be baptized this Saturday. Her life totally changed, and her son, Alan, noticed that change, and began asking. She then offered to send the missionaries over. That is when we showed up. We had a great first lesson together, and just introduced ourselves, set some expectations including inviting him to be baptized when he finds out that the things we teach are true, and taught him about the nature of the Godhead, because he didn't even have a baseline knowledge of God. He accepted all of it, and Elder Stotts and Elder Corry were able to go back on Saturday and teach the Restoration to Alan and his wife, and they are both 100% on board. Elder Stotts and I left the lesson with the biggest grins on our faces and we couldn't believe it. It is exactly what we needed that day, and more importantly it is exactly what Elder Stotts needed to grow. He was able to recognize that his thought was a prompting from the Holy Ghost to go and look in the garage, and that was a huge moral boost for him. It was also a good reminder to me and a humbling experience, because I did not have much faith in our day together, but it turned out to be what Elder Stotts said, "One of the greatest days of my mission!" And I agree…it was one of the best days of my mission.

What also made the miracle with Elder Stotts so big was that in our companionship study we did lots of role plays on three topics: Establishing expectations and explaining our purpose in a first lesson scenario, inviting someone to be baptized in the first lesson (which is really hard for most missionaries, but it makes a huge difference down the road in the teaching process), and inviting the head of the household to offer a kneeling prayer at the end of the first lesson. I don't think Elder Stotts enjoyed doing that many role-plays on those hard situations in our companion study, but we used all three in our lesson with Alan, and they all worked out great. He was grateful after our lesson with Alan that we had role-played those things. Another small miracle.

My stud companion, Elder Han!
The last of the big miracles of the week came to Elder Han and me. On Wednesday, I received a phone call from a woman who introduced herself as Emily and said, before I could introduce myself over the phone, that she wanted to set up a lesson. She gave me an address, and a phone number and said that her boyfriend named Francisco wanted to learn about the church. This is always very promising, but Emily was speaking to me in perfect English, so I figured it would be a referral for the English missionaries. I explained to her that we were the Spanish missionaries, but she told us that her boyfriend actually prefers Spanish. We were pumped, but it almost seemed too good to be true. But nevertheless, we aren't going to deny someone a lesson (and basically their salvation) so we set up an appointment for Thursday morning.

We went over to Francisco’s house Thursday morning and he turned out to be the most solid investigator I have ever met in my whole mission. He is about 50 years old and works at a restaurant in town. His girlfriend, the gal that called us, is a member of the church in California. He grew up with a Catholic background, but never really attended church regularly. He told us that he has had many experiences with nice Mormon people, but he was never ready to receive the missionaries into his home until now. At one point in his life, his mom had to receive physical therapy 3x/week and he would take her every time.  The therapist was a member of the church, and would regularly teach Francisco about the church.  The therapist even invited him many times to come to church with him, but Francisco always declined.

He told us that recently he has been feeling kinda empty in his life, but he didn't know why, because he has a good job, a comfortable home, and a nice girlfriend who he loves...he seemed to have it all, yet something was missing. Then it occurred to him that maybe it was something spiritual that he was lacking. That is when he told his girlfriend to have us come over. We had a great first lesson with him, and he accepted everything we taught him. He told us that from the moment he saw us on his doorstep he knew we brought the truth. He said that he felt very comfortable when we were in his home, and we testified that it was the Holy Ghost that gave him those good feelings, and that the Holy Ghost only testifies of truth. He agreed to be baptized in our first lesson on May 28th. I was smiling the whole lesson, because I was just so excited by the whole thing!! He told us that he didn't know how to send texts, but could reply if we texted him first. He told us to text him and ask him how his reading of the books was going to make sure he was doing it. He also told us that he didn't want to be one of those people who we visit once a week for a year, and after a year we ask him, "Francisco, why aren't you baptzied?" But that he was really ready to act now and find out for himself. It was the best first lesson that I've ever had with someone.

We went back Saturday morning with a member of the branch, and they became instantly friends. The first thing he told us was that he has been thinking about getting a new job, because with his current job he can't attend church, because our Sacrament starts at 11:00 am and his shift starts at noon. We couldn't believe it! We taught the Restoration and he accepted all of it. He said he was still on track to be baptized, and it was something he wanted to do. After we recited the famous First Vision (the most powerful part of every Restoration lesson) he said that it was almost as if the light from the picture that I held up went all the way up to heaven, and he felt the presence of God tell him that Joseph Smith was a prophet. He had lots of questions from our first visit about where the Book of Mormon came from, but we answered all of them with the message of the Restoration.

We learned that the restaurant where he works is about a 10-minute walk from our church, so he agreed to come to church for the first half hour or so, and then head off to work. The member we brought with us offered to pick him up, because Francisco doesn't drive. And sure enough, Francisco came to church with the member yesterday! We sat by him and expected him to get up and leave after half an hour, but 30 minutes into the meeting I leaned over to him and asked if he was going to leave. He said, he liked it too much, and wanted to stay until the end. So Sacrament ended at like 12:15 and we thought for sure he was going to have to book it to work, but then he insisted on staying for Sunday School also!! So he stayed until 1pm and then took off for work. We still don't know what happened with his work, we will find out on Wednesday when we go back to help him paint his house a little bit and then have another lesson. He is what you call a GOLDEN investigator that literally fell into our laps.

Francisco is truly an answer to our prayers. We have been praying and fasting to have success in our area, and now the gears in our area are starting to move forward. Francisco lives on the opposite side of our area, where almost no Hispanics live, so we never are in his neighborhood. That to me is a testament that Heavenly Father is blessing us because of our labors. You would think that one of the thousands of people we contact on the streets would become that solid investigator that we all long for, and sometimes it is! But not for us right now, I know Heavenly Father truly has answered our prayers. Now we have Francisco who is awesome, and also the Luciano family who is progressing slowly but surely. We are finally starting to see fruits from our labors, and I wouldn't want to be anywhere else in the whole world than where I am right now. I love being a missionary.

These experiences have certainly built my faith and hope for this work, and truly in the power of Jesus Christ. However, we learn that God always provides miracles in 2 Nephi 27:23…

"For behold, I am God; and I am a God of miracles; and I will show unto the world that I am the same yesterday, today, and forever; and I work not among the children of men save it be according to their faith."

This is how God works. I know that we receive a testimony “after the trial of our faith” (Ether 12:6) and sometimes, we have to just do what we know to be right, and then have the faith that it will all work out and we will be blessed in the end. This is how the apostle Peter I am sure felt, when Christ invited him to walk on the water towards him, he had to just do it, and then he was blessed. It is my testimony that we are experiencing miracles all around us every day...some small and some big.  I know that God exists, because he blesses us with these miracles regularly. I know that this is the true church because the miracles I have seen this past week only confirm that statement.

I love you guys! Have a great week!

Week 82 – New Stake in Zion

Biking all day...
April 11, 2016
Hi everyone!!

Congratulations to my sister Grace who just played the official role of a "Mersister" in “The Little Mermaid.”  I’m sure she did a great job, so please congratulate her! You’re awesome, Grace!!

No spotting of any Mersisters here in Reno, but lots of sunny weather! Elder Han and I had another fun week, and it really has been nothing but a blast serving with him.

So the biggest news of this past week, is that yesterday was Stake Conference, and we had two visiting general authorities from the Quorum of the Seventy, Elder Echo Hawk and Elder Spannus, who came and reorganized the Reno and Reno North stakes, and created a third stake…called the Nevada Mount Rose stake! We knew that the change was going to happen thanks to some inside sources (namely, President Chesnut) but it was still a great meeting! There were no new wards created, but they just redid the boundaries and called a new stake presidency. The meeting was really spiritual, and we got to hear lots of powerful testimonies from the new leaders that were called and the old leaders that were released. The church is growing day by day, and it is exciting to be a part of it.

We saw lots of cool miracles this past week in our area! The biggest one is that we finally were able to teach the Luciano family again! We've been setting up lots of appointments with them, but they have all been falling through. We had decided that if they keep cancelling then we were going to drop them this week. We had an appointment scheduled for Wednesday night at 8:30, but then in the afternoon we got a text from their 17-year old daughter (who is super mature for her age) and she cancelled the lesson because something came up. We were bummed, but honestly not surprised given the recent history. But then around 8:00, she texted us and said, "Hey we fixed the problem that came up, and you can come over right now if you want!"

Exchanges with Elder Smith
Thankfully, we didn't have any other set appointments at that moment, so we went over and had a really good lesson! They said that they have had lots of questions and doubts about some of the doctrine, because they grew up in a different Christian church. They didn't understand the plan of salvation, and the principle of the Spirit World, and the Three degrees of Glory. They had totally marked up and written all over the plan of salvation pamphlet that we left with them about a month ago, and we love when that happens because it shows they actually want to learn! We were able to answer all of their questions using scriptures from both the Book of Mormon and the Bible, and the whole family was really impressed that we had answers to everything. It was actually a very spiritual lesson, and although at times Brother and Sister Luciano got really heated and almost wanted to debate with us, I felt very calm throughout the whole thing. I know that the Holy Ghost guided the lesson and put into our minds the scriptures we needed to share, and the inspired questions we needed to ask.

At the end of the lesson we committed them to all be baptized on the 14th of May, and all three (dad, mom, and daughter) accepted! They told us they would read some of the Book of Mormon and pray everyday. Both prayers that they said in the lesson at the beginning and at the end were way good…they asked God for help to know if this is the right church, and if it was, if they could have the strength needed to be baptized. It was great. The father even said at the end, "You guys put me in "check" like in Chess, not checkmate, but check, when you answered all of my questions. I am ready to prepare to be baptized." It was great! They told us they would not be able to attend church this past weekend because they had family coming into town, but we were ok with that because it was stake conference anyways, and we knew it would just be a crazy meeting, so we didn't push to hard. We left the lesson super pumped and on a spiritual high!

But then it gets better...two days later, on Friday, the teenage daughter texted us and asked if she could get a ride to church, because she wanted to come and find out for herself if the church is true. We were shocked! We explained that of course we would find a ride, so we got her a ride and she came to stake conference yesterday and loved it! Despite the fact it was a unique meeting with a new stake created, she said she really enjoyed it. She is really solid, and we think she will for sure be baptized on May 14th. The parents are committed at this point, but they are both addicted to cigarettes and coffee, so we are going to meet with them again tonight and implement a plan we developed to help them quit by the end of the month so they will be ready by May 14th. I have grown to love the Luciano family a lot. Please keep them in your prayers that they will progress and be ready for baptism! It is really exciting.

Wednesday morning we got a call from another potential investigator who we never had the chance to sit down with and teach, we just met her on the streets and knocked on her door a few times, but never really went anywhere. But on Wednesday she called us in the morning and said, "Hey today is a great day for us if you want to come over and have a lesson!" Our jaws were on the floor, because that only happens once in a blue moon, especially if you haven't ever taught them before. So we went over and had an awesome lesson together. It is two sisters who live together, and both are no longer with their husbands, but they each have a few kids. They are really nice and want their children to grown up in a church. We are excited to go back and teach them some more.

This week we were walking down the street because we had like 10 minutes before our appointment, and so we came across this guy sitting on his porch and after our very friendly greeting he responded with a glare and a frown. So we responded with another friendly, "Who do you know in this neighborhood that is going through a hard time and could use a simple prayer?" and he responded with some cuss words and strong language and told us to leave. So we responded once again with a friendly, "Have a nice day!" and then he told us, "I hope you get hit by a car." Elder Han and I couldn't control our laughter after we got out of earshot, because we have never heard something so mean said to us before!! I am grateful that Han and I can laugh off stupid encounters like that, and just roll with the motto, "Come what may, and love it!" We were joking that we wanted to get a wheelchair and then go up to him and say that he got as he wished and see what he did after that. We hopefully planted a little teeny tiny seed that can maybe one day be harvested in the future....

The new Hermana who serves in our branch with Sister Daniels had an appendicitis this past week! So they have been stuck in the apartment all week while she recovers. It made me grateful that I already had mine taken out, so I don't ever have to worry about that one again!

Those are a few of the highlights of the week! I will keep you posted on how they progress and what steps they are taking. We have about 100 potential investigators, so we are just trying to find those who are prepared to accept the gospel right now and join the church right now. It is the best job on earth!!

This weekend really strengthened my testimony that our church leaders are called of God. I know that they are all inspired men, and that if we follow them, we will not be led astray. I am grateful for a living prophet and the other apostles on the earth that guide us. I know that our leaders hold Priesthood keys that allow us to participate in saving ordinances such as baptism and confirmation. It is also through those priesthood keys that I will live with my siblings and parents for ever, even after this life, and I know that I will be able to live with my future wife and children for eternity also, but it is only made possible through that restored priesthood power.

"For I have conferred upon you the keys and power of the priesthood, wherein I restore all things, and make known unto you all things in due time." D&C 132:45

The Church is true, and I love you guys!!

Love,

Elder Todd

Week 81 – Three Cheers for Prophets and Apostles!

Birthday dinner with our good friend, Verduzco
April 4, 2016
Well Howdy!!

What a great week it has been here in Nevada, and across the whole world! After the random snow fall last Monday, the snow melted and now we are blessed with beautiful weather! The past few days have been perfect and the forecast is calling for more perfect weather this week. So we can't complain!

Thank you to all who sent birthday wishes my way this past week, it really means a lot!

Giving our training at MLC with Elder Han.
(Notice the matching ties - haha!)
This past Friday Elder Han and I attended the monthly MLC (Mission Leadership Conference) meeting, and it was a great experience! Elder Han and I were asked to give a training on building unity within our zone, because we pridefully consider ourselves and our zone the most unified in the mission – haha!  We also got to hear from the other leaders from across the mission, from President and Sister Chesnut, and from President Perry, who is a counselor in the mission presidency.  He taught us about virtue. I've talked about him before in past emails, but I love hearing from him because he is so wise!! He knows the scriptures really well and always gives great insights and trainings. He taught us about virtue and really the whole training was geared for life after our missions, because so many missionaries develop great habits on their missions, but then they return home and fall right back into old habits that aren't good. So he invited us all to write ourselves a letter to read when we return home and tell ourselves what we expect when we get home. I know that I have personally developed some great habits in regards to reading and studying the scriptures, fervent personal prayers, and building clean and healthy relationships, and I want to continue my progress in all of the categories when I return home – and not digress. It can be very easy to slip back into old habits, but I won't let that happen!

This weekend was exactly what I needed on my mission. After the MLC meeting and the Saturday conference sessions, I was on a spiritual high. We were also invited to go out for pizza with some brothers in the branch after the Priesthood session, and we sat with a brother who is American, but served his mission in Mexico. He recounted mission experiences to us and I could tell by the way he talked about his mission that he loved every minute of it. Just hearing stories from his mission and feeling the passion he had got me super pumped to go out and work hard. Elder Han and I were both on a spiritual high and we recommitted our selves to the mission as we come down the home stretch. We are so pumped to go to work and see tons more miracles!!!!

Exchanges with Elder Jensen (one of the pigeon Elders!)
This week some Elders in our zone got together for lunch, and while they were eating at their apartment, they thought it would be funny to lure some pigeons inside the apartment and then  shut the door. They managed to do so, thus trapping a handful of pigeons inside their apartment. Of course, the pigeons didn't know what to do, so as you can imagine they flew all over their apartment making a mess of everything. They caught the whole thing on video and showed it to us. We thought it was hilarious!!! Sometimes all you can do is shake you head and say "Daggum Elders!" Like I mentioned before, we take pride in having the best zone in the mission.

But wow – what a great conference weekend it was the past few days…to listen and learn from the Lord's prophet and apostles!! I personally thought it was a great conference and I know that I learned a ton from each session. A few personal highlights:
  • The talk given by Elder Snow Saturday morning (partially because I got to meet the man and eat dinner with him, but it was also a great talk on humility and the hymns!)
  • The talk given by Elder Renlund about how the closer we get to God, the more we realize we have to do for him, and the farther we get from God, the more we expect in return. I found this principle to ring true immediately! So often, I have met people who tell us, "I would believe in God, but if God was real then he would give me a better job and a better place to live." So then they quit going to church and don't want to learn more, yet they expect so much from him. On the contrary, those who understand their relationship with Heavenly Father are grateful for him and do everything they can to grow, even if they don't have as much money as they would like or if something goes wrong, they don't lose hope. A great talk!!
  • The talk by Elder Owen in Priesthood session about how a leader is a follower and a follower is a leader. I loved this talk so much, and he used great principles from Christ's life. I know personally I get prideful at times and I think to myself that everyone should follow me because I always know what is right, and therefore I am too good to consider myself a follower. So it was a great reminder that I needed to hear…that I can also be a powerful follower, and be exactly obedient to whatever is asked of me.
  • The talk by Elder Oaks on opposition. Really made great sense of why we must have opposition, a question that we often get, "Why do things have to be so hard? If God really wants me to join this church, why does he make it so hard?" Good doctrinal talk.

I could say highlights from every single talk, but those are just a few. We had lined up with some families in the branch and some investigators to watch conference with them in their home, but they almost all fell through! On Sunday morning we watched the session with a family in the branch in Spanish, and honestly it was quite hard for me to get as much out of it! I could understand the gist of what they were saying, but the details were hard to catch. It was cool though, for Elder Christofferson's talk about “Fatherhood,” he translated and recorded his own talk! We could tell by his voice, and I knew beforehand that he was fluent in Spanish. But watching conference for a session in Spanish really strengthened my testimony of how important it is to learn and hear the gospel in our own native languages, because it is just so much harder to grasp as much when it is in a foreign language, even if I am half decent at speaking the other language. It motivated me to learn more Spanish so that I can more clearly teach to our Spanish investigators.

Chillin' with Han
Although both of the prophet’s talks were quite short, I really like what he said in the Priesthood session, "Remember wherever you go, your priesthood goes with you." This is a powerful concept that reminds me to stand in holy places. As bearers of the Priesthood of God, we can't afford to mess around and go into unholy places. It was a great reminder that I need to always live and act worthy of the power of God, as it is a privilege and honor to hold it. It was honestly sad to see him speak for such a short period of time in both the Priesthood and Sunday morning sessions – because it shows that he is not physically very strong anymore, but I know that Thomas S. Monson is a prophet of God. I know that the things he taught were very important. The Holy Ghost told me as I listened to him that what he was saying was true, and that he really is a Prophet called of God. What a great blessing it is to be able to hear from someone who receives direct revelation from God! It is something unique to our church, and I am very grateful for that.

Me and Verduzco
In the Book of Mormon we read of the purpose of prophets:

"And the Lord God hath sent his holy prophets among all the children of men, to declare these things to every kindred, nation, and tongue, that thereby whosoever should believe that Christ should come, the same might receive remission of their sins, and rejoice with exceedingly great joy, even as though he had already come among them." (Mosiah 3:13)

Truly, a prophet's job is to teach and testify of Jesus Christ and his divinity, and to invite all to come unto him and "receive a remission of their sins." I know that is exactly what President Monson does, along with the other apostles. The cool part about the purpose of a prophet is that it is very similar to my purpose as a full-time missionary. My purpose is "to invite others to come unto Christ by helping them receive the restored gospel through faith in Jesus Christ and His Atonement, repentance, baptism, receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost, and enduring to the end." So in other words, my job is to teach and testify of Jesus Christ, and invite everyone to come unto him!

It really is a complete and total joy to teach about Christ, and wear his name on my chest for two years. I wouldn't want to be doing anything else in the whole world that this work right now. This is the Church of Christ. Thomas S. Monson is a prophet, and the Book of Mormon is true!

Have a stupendous week everyone!

Love,

Elder Todd
This is the workout that some Elders do every morning.
(Notice line 6 - haha!)
